MEMIC Opens Applications for 2025 Horizon Scholarships Supporting Families Affected by Workplace Injuries

(Portland, Maine) - The MEMIC Group announced today that applications are open for its Harvey Picker Horizon Scholarship Program, offering college tuition assistance of up to $10,000 to students whose families have been impacted by serious workplace injuries. The program, which has awarded $290,000 to more than 50 students since 2001, continues its mission of supporting educational opportunities for children and spouses of injured workers.
Last year, the program supported two New York students who tragically lost their father to a severe work-related injury, as well as a University of Connecticut student whose father became injured after their family emigrated from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Each recipient was awarded a scholarship of $10,000.
"Workplace injuries create ripple effects that touch entire families, affecting not just their present circumstances but their future opportunities," said Michael Bourque, President & CEO of The MEMIC Group. "While our insurance coverage addresses immediate medical needs and lost wages, the Horizon Scholarship Program helps fulfill our deeper commitment to supporting families as they rebuild and pursue their dreams."
Named in honor of Harvey Picker, the scholarship program celebrates the legacy of an accomplished physicist, educator, and philanthropist who served on MEMIC's Board of Directors and was instrumental in the company's founding. Picker's dedication to education and community service continues to inspire the program's mission.
Eligible applicants must be children or spouses of workers who were employed by a MEMIC policyholder at the time of their work-related injury. The selection committee evaluates applications based on academic achievement, community involvement, financial need, personal experiences, and future aspirations. Applications for the 2025 scholarships must be submitted by April 18, 2025.
