USM Student Earns Summer Safety Internship With MEMIC

PORTLAND, ME, June 17, 2008 – MEMIC has named Jennifer DeWitt of Portland as its 2008 Summer Safety Intern. DeWitt’s work will include stints with a wide array of MEMIC customers.
MEMIC began its partnership with University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2005. The internship helps students gain real-life experiences before entering the workforce.
“This program helps ensure that there are qualified safety and health professionals who are available here in Maine,” said John Dodge, MEMIC’s Director of Safety and Loss Control in Maine. “Plus, it gives MEMIC customers additional motivation and assistance with special short-term projects they may want to develop or complete.”
DeWitt is excited about the dynamic nature of the safety field. “It’s a good mix of desk and field work,” she said.
She will study ergonomic patterns at workplaces, offering advice on reducing potential soft tissue injuries that can result from repetitive tasks.
“Most of my experience with safety and health so far has been academic,” said Dewitt. “I want to learn as much as I can about the ‘real safety world’ before returning to USM in the fall.”
Prior to enrolling at USM, she worked as a photographer after taking classes at Maine College of Art and Husson College.
