PORTLAND, ME, January 2, 2013 – A new Maine law regarding the definition of an employee took effect January 1, 2013. As a result, a new endorsement that was recently approved by the Maine Bureau of Insurance, is now being included with all policies with exposure in Maine and effective January 1, 2013. This endorsement affirms MEMIC's continuing policy regarding independent subcontractors.

As a reminder, MEMIC policyholders who use independent subcontractors should be instructed to obtain a certificate of workers' compensation insurance or an approved "Predetermination of Independent Contractor Status" (WCB 266). These forms are available on the Maine Workers' Compensation Board's website.
