MEMIC Makes $5,000 Horizon Scholarship Awards to Westbrook High, Deering Grads

PORTLAND, Maine, June 9, 2003 – At its annual meeting on June 9, Maine Employers' Mutual Insurance Company (MEMIC) made a total of $10,000 in scholarship awards to two Portland-area students whose families have been affected by workplace injuries.
Scott Hannigan of Westbrook and Matthew Lakin of Portland have each been awarded scholarships for $5,000 from MEMIC's Horizon Scholarship Fund.
"Workplace injuries can have a great impact on a family," said MEMIC President and CEO John Leonard. "While workers' compensation insurance offers help in meeting daily obligations, no insurance can cover all the ways that a workplace injury can affect a family. Given the importance of education in our time, we provide these scholarships to help these families to fund their children's education. These are two accomplished young men who will achieve great things in the future."
Hannigan, a recent graduate of Westbrook High School, will attend the University of Vermont where he has been accepted into the school's 6-year Physical Therapy program. At the end of 6 years, Hannigan will have earned a Master's degree in Physical Therapy. Hannigan's mother has been unable to work due to carpal tunnel injuries to both of her wrists. The family's finances have been further hurt when Hannigan's father was diagnosed with cancer.
Lakin is a recent graduate of Deering High School in Portland. He will attend the University of Southern Maine and is still determining between pre-law and engineering. Lakin's step father suffered a head injury when he fell at work and hit his head on some ice. The head injury's lingering effects continue to keep him out of work.
The MEMIC Horizon Scholarship Program was created by MEMIC's Board of Directors in 2001. Since then, it has made awards totaling $25,000 to 7 students whose families have suffered with workplace injuries. Winners are selected from a pool of applicants with an emphasis on academic ability, community involvement and future promise. Applicants must also show financial need.
