PORTLAND, Maine, June 18, 2012—At its annual meeting last week, workers' compensation insurer MEMIC presented awards for workplace safety to six of its nearly 20,000 policyholders.

At the Portland Museum of Art, Assistant Vice President for Loss Control and Safety Karl Siegfried paid tribute to the following employers for their workplace safety efforts:

"Every year we look forward to this opportunity to recognize businesses that truly stand out in the crowd,” said Siegfried. “Today, we recognize six policyholders of MEMIC’s nearly 20,000. That makes today’s winners a truly special group.”

The awardees included:

Knox Machine Company, Warren, Maine
In business for 30 years, Knox Machine Company manufactures precision machined parts for the defense, plastics and power generation industries to name a few. In their seven years with MEMIC, they have had no workplace injuries. Their safety culture starts at the top with owner Charles Maxcy, and is upheld by Safety Manager Ron Wellman and their 50 employees.

Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, St. Johnsbury, Vermont
This 75-bed community hospital can attribute its rising workplace safety success to its commitment to change. Senior management’s buy in and regular safety meetings have paved the way for needed safety equipment purchases and a revamped workplace violence program, which has become a model for other hospitals.

N.S. Giles Foundations, Inc., Bangor, Maine
Founded in 1998, N.S. Giles Foundation is one of the top residential and commercial foundation companies in Maine. The company has thrived in the last three years during a slow construction economy due to its safety record and reputation. Their stellar safety program is championed by HR Safety Manager Gerri Daggett. She oversees everything from new hire training to daily site inspections to mandatory stretching to a thorough return-to-work program.

Pines Health Services is a rural non-profit health clinic that employees 146 people with six different locations in Aroostook County. Their revitalized safety process is praised for “keeping injured employees at work and managing their claims closely.”

E.S. Boulos Company, Inc., Westbrook, Maine
E.S. Boulos has been an electrical construction and maintenance contractor for over 90 years, employing anywhere from 100 to 300 people. Safety is an integral part of this company from officers to the rank and file. A job safety plan is completed every day and many workers are required to complete a 4-year training program through the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
