PORTLAND, Maine, June 17, 2009 – At its Annual Meeting of Policyholders on in June, MEMIC awarded a $5,000 scholarship to Adam Clement of Rome, Maine.
The MEMIC Harvey Picker Horizon Scholarship, awarded annually to the spouse or child of a worker who has suffered a serious injury or death at work, is selected from dozens of applicants each year. Clement’s father suffered a significant back injury in September 2008. After serious surgery and extensive rehabilitation, Adam’s father has largely recovered, but the injury has had a negative impact on the family’s ability to help pay for Adam’s college.
“Adam is a wonderful young man full of determination and great potential,” said MEMIC President and CEO John Leonard. “This scholarship is meant to help alleviate the devastating impact that a workplace injury can have on a family. We’re proud to support Adam in his education.” Clement is a student in the Electrical Technology Program at Kennebec Valley Community College.
Clement works part-time and also volunteers at the Rome fire department, where he is a captain. Balancing several jobs, school work, and helping his family through this difficult time has been tough for Adam, but he faces the challenge head on. “I am paying all of my college bills by myself,” he said. This scholarship will allow him to afford the upcoming semester.
The MEMIC Harvey Picker Horizon Scholarship has been presented annually every year since 2001. With the 2009 award, MEMIC has given scholarships totaling $55,000.
MEMIC renamed its scholarship program after Harvey Picker, who died in March of 2008. Picker was a renowned physicist, educator and philanthropist who valued education, and who contributed significantly to Maine when he retired to Camden in 1983. In 1992, Picker was appointed by then Gov. John R. McKernan as a member of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Workers’ Compensation which led to the formation of MEMIC. Picker served as a member of the Board of Directors of MEMIC.
