MEMIC Awards $5,000 Scholarship to Dixfield Student

PORTLAND, Maine, June 29, 2006—At its Annual Meeting of Policyholders in June, Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance Company (MEMIC) awarded a scholarship for $5,000 to Ashley Stone of Dixfield, Maine.
The MEMIC Horizon Scholarship is made annually to the spouse or a child of a worker who has suffered a serious injury or death at work. Stone’s father was injured at work in a car accident in December of 2005. While he is slowly recovering after a long hospital stay, the injury has hindered the family’s ability to support Ashley as she begins her senior year at the University of Maine.
“Ashley is an impressive young woman who has demonstrated her personal drive to succeed in the face of adversity,” said MEMIC President and CEO John Leonard. “This scholarship is meant to help mitigate the devastating impact that a workplace injury can have on a family. We’re proud to support Ashley in her education.”
Stone was chosen the winner from dozens of applicants because of the demonstrated need and because of her performance as a student at the University of Maine. She has maintained a 3.5 grade point average in the School of Business. Before attending the University of Maine, she graduated from Dirigo High School near the top of her class.
The MEMIC Horizon Scholarship has been presented annually every year since 2001. With the 2006 award, the company has given scholarships totaling $40,000.
