John is president and CEO of The MEMIC Group, including Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance Company (MEMIC), MEMIC Indemnity Company, and MEMIC Casualty Company. The MEMIC Group is headquartered in Portland, Maine with offices in Manchester, NH; Glastonbury, CT; and Albany, NY; Weehawken, NJ; West Conshohocken, PA; Tysons Corner, VA; and Tampa, FL.

John began with MEMIC in 1993, the company’s first year, after a lengthy career with The Travelers, where he led the Commercial Lines Agency Marketing and Underwriting Division. MEMIC customers now account for approximately 65 percent of the commercial workers’ compensation premium in Maine. The MEMIC Group writes more business outside of its home state of Maine and is ranked as the fourth largest workers' comp carrier in New England. Under John's direction, The MEMIC Group is now licensed across the U.S. and has maintained an "A" rating from A.M. Best for the past 17 years. 

He was the 2011-12 board chair for the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI), the leading ratemaking organization in the workers’ compensation insurance industry and also served on its Nominating and Governance Committee. From 2008-15, he served as the chairman of the board of ACORD, the global standards setting organization serving the insurance industry, and currently serves on its executive committee. John also served as board chair of the National Workers’ Compensation Reinsurance Association. He is a former president of the American Association of State Compensation Insurance Funds (AASCIF) and chairman of its executive committee. AASCIF members write approximately $17 billion annually in workers’ compensation premium throughout Canada and the U.S. Recently, John was appointed to the New England Advisory Council to the Boston Federal Reserve. 

Currently, he is also on the board of directors of MEMIC, MEMIC Indemnity Company and MEMIC Casualty Company. He received the Distinguished Citizen Award presented by the Pine Tree Council of the Boy Scouts of America in 2001, and in 2003 was inducted into the Maine Business Hall of Fame. He serves as president of the Board of the American Society of Workers’ Comp Professionals, Inc. (AMCOMP), an organization dedicated to education in the workers’ compensation industry. He was the 2008 recipient of the Legends Award conferred on him by AMCOMP.
John is a former member of the board of directors of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) as well as a trustee of the Portland Symphony Orchestra (PSO) and is now a member of the PSO’s President’s Council. He also served nine years on the board of trustees for Mercy Hospital and the Mercy Health System of Maine and on the board of directors of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce. 

A graduate of Siena College, he is an advocate of continuing education and has completed executive development programs at Penn State University, the University of Illinois and the University of Michigan. John is a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), and later received his certification as a registered representative (stockbroker) completing Series 7 and 24. In 2003, he was given the prestigious Joseph Buff Award by Siena College for outstanding career achievement. He currently serves on the Board of the Foundation for Maine’s Community College System and previously served as a Trustee of St. Joseph’s College and on the Advisory Board to the University of Southern Maine’s School of Business.
