  • Karl Siegfried, CECD, Senior Vice President, Loss Control and Safety Services

    Karl Siegfried

The most effective way to control injury costs is through injury prevention. That is what I find so exciting about ergonomics. When companies take a proactive approach to their injury-reduction efforts, positive gains are realized.  Stopping an injury before it occurs not only reduces costs, but also protects a company’s most important resource, the employee. It has been my experience that the best approach to reduce ergonomic risk factors is through engineering.  Using solid Ergonomic Design and Human Factors you engineer the behavior you want to achieve. Ergonomic improvements add to the bottom line. By eliminating unnecessary efforts and improving process or material flow, we have been able to consistently demonstrate that good ergonomics is good economics.”

Karl has been applying ergonomic interventions for more than 30 years in a variety of work environments. He started at MEMIC in 1998, heading up the Ergonomics section in Loss Control.  Here he developed programs and policies to assist policyholders in reducing musculoskeletal disorders, some of the costliest at MEMIC.  Karl now heads up the loss control team for the MEMIC Group.  Prior to his time at MEMIC, Karl was the corporate ergonomist at a major shipyard in southern midcoast Maine, where he was responsible for overall program development, policies, and procedures. Karl has worked with NIOSH for the national project, “Ergonomic Study of Maritime Industries,” a NIOSH/ OSHA project charged with developing ergonomic guidelines for the maritime industry. He has served on various task forces, implemented numerous ergonomic interventions in both office and production environments, and developed and presented training in multiple ergonomic disciplines in the U.S., Asia, and Europe.

Karl has a master’s degree in occupational safety and health from Columbia Southern University. He has also received formal training in ergonomics from the Harvard School of Public Health, the University of Michigan, and NIOSH. Karl is a Certified Ergonomics Compliance Director (CECD) and is a Workers’ Compensation.
