    Beth Stowell

“It is through a company’s culture that an organization can either reinforce the safety efforts of its workers or create barriers to the development of an effective safety program. The integrity of organizational development is substantially enhanced by customized, need-based, and targeted professional safety management services.”

Beth has been with MEMIC since the creation of the company more than 20 years ago. She has been leader for the healthcare industry developing programs and setting the bar high for safe patient handling techniques in all environments. Application of ergonomic intervention programs in the healthcare setting such as minimizing the forward flexion, using the knees and core muscles has changed the lift mechanism to push/pull body mechanics. She has presented the approaches and results at national meetings of the AAOHN and AOHP.

Beth has more than 29 years of experience in health/safety and occupational medicine. She has developed and implemented safety management procedures that yield safer work practices and help control costs. Targeting loss leaders through data trending, defined medical management practices, developing policy to abate unsafe behaviors, and updating with new technology has improved the performance of her policyholders.

As leader of the healthcare service team at MEMIC, Beth has led the challenge to abate risks in a variety of caregiver settings from New England to as far away as California. She was also instrumental in developing an organizational development tool, the Cultural Safety Audit, which has been implemented in companies throughout Maine.

Beth served on Maine Governor’s Commission on Safety and Health in the Workplace for 14 years. Beth worked to create the Maine chapter of the AOHP (Association of Occupational Health Professionals), where she has been a member and served on the board for nine years and was its president for four years.

Beth earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Vermont and a master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina. She is a Certified Occupational Health Nurse Specialist (COHN-S), a Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP), and a Certified Hazard Control Manager (CHCM).
